Hepatic hemangioma embolization

Hemangioma

A hemangioma is a congenital lesion that may also be observed in the liver.
The nature of this vascular mass is benign, and in most cases, it is discovered incidentally and does not require treatment.
In cases where this mass causes symptoms such as pain or bleeding, it will require follow-up and treatment.

Treatment of Hemangioma

In the past, surgery was the only treatment option for hemangiomas, which was often not feasible in most cases. Today, with the use of minimally invasive endovascular treatments, it is possible to block the blood vessels supplying the hemangioma. As a result, the hemangioma becomes inactive, turns into non-viable tissue, and eventually shrinks significantly.

Advantages of Embolization

This procedure is performed without anesthesia and has significantly fewer complications compared to surgery.
The patient’s return to normal daily life occurs in the shortest possible time.
This procedure involves minimal bleeding compared to surgery.
The recurrence rate is very low.

Method of Performing Liver Embolization

After reviewing the documents and confirming the hemangioma mass by the radiologist, under the guidance of imaging equipment and with the use of local anesthesia, a specialized catheter is inserted through the right groin into the hepatic artery (at the origin of the blood vessels supplying the hemangioma).
After the injection of the contrast agent and confirmation of the hemangioma’s location, a combination of blocking agents is injected into the hemangioma’s artery, with the procedure continuously monitored through imaging.
After the injection of the blocking agents, the catheter is removed, and to prevent bleeding, the incision site is closed using Angio-Seal or by applying additional manual pressure.
After dressing the incision site, a sandbag is placed at the location for 1 to 2 hours to prevent bleeding.
The right groin should remain immobile for at least 24 hours, and if necessary, apply hand compression to the incision site.
Embolization of liver hemangioma is performed without surgical incision, requiring only a small millimeter-sized incision in the groin area. After a short period, no trace of the incision remains, and it offers significant advantages compared to surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is hepatic hemangioma embolization?

This method is a minimally invasive treatment that reduces blood flow to the mass and causes it to shrink by blocking the blood vessels supplying the hemangioma.

No, this procedure is performed without surgical incisions and serves as a suitable alternative to traditional surgery for many patients.

The patient is usually discharged the same day or the following day, and a reduction in the size of the hemangioma along with symptom improvement is observed over the course of a few weeks to a few months.
