MRI-guided breast mass biopsy

Breast mass biopsy

For the first time, MRI-guided breast mass biopsy has been introduced at the pardis noor center. In this method, a sample of breast tissue is taken under MRI guidance. The MRI helps determine the location of the lesion within the breast tissue and the precise placement of the biopsy needle for sample collection.
A biopsy needle is inserted through the skin into the lesion to extract a tissue sample.
This technique is less invasive compared to surgery, does not involve radiation like mammography-guided biopsy, and offers significantly higher accuracy in targeting the suspicious area for biopsy.
The patient’s recovery time after a biopsy is short, allowing them to quickly return to their daily activities.
The most accurate method for evaluating breast lesions is MRI. Due to its high precision, small lesions may be detected on the MRI that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Mammography or ultrasound are not visible.
This is the only method by which samples can be taken from these suspicious lesions. This technique allows for both biopsy and vacuum-assisted biopsy.
The approximate time required to complete this task will be around 30 minutes.

Applications of MRI-guided biopsy include:

A suspicious mass that is not visible through other diagnostic methods.
Areas with tissue disorganization
– Areas with abnormal tissue changes

This technique does not require general anesthesia and can be performed using only local anesthesia.

Steps for Performing Breast Mass Biopsy Under MRI Guidance

MRI-guided biopsy begins with reviewing prior imaging and determining the precise location of the lesion. After preparing the patient and administering local anesthesia, a specialized needle is directed toward the mass, and tissue samples are collected. Finally, the biopsy site is evaluated using MRI, and if necessary, a metallic marker is placed. The area is then dressed, and post-procedure care instructions are provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

In what cases is an MRI-guided breast biopsy performed?

This method is performed when the breast lesion is only visible on MRI and cannot be detected through ultrasound or mammography.

After determining the precise location of the lesion using MRI, the biopsy needle is accurately guided toward the mass, and a tissue sample is collected for pathological examination.

No, an MRI-guided breast biopsy is performed on an outpatient basis, and the patient can be discharged shortly afterward.
