Amniocentesis

What is Amniocentesis?

Amniotic fluid surrounds the fetus and is sometimes analyzed to diagnose genetic disorders. The most appropriate gestational age for amniocentesis is 14 weeks. Sampling is not recommended before 14 weeks of pregnancy.

Amniocentesis Procedure

Amniocentesis is performed through the abdominal surface. First, the fetal heartbeat is assessed, and then, under ultrasound guidance, a specialized sampling needle is inserted into the amniotic sac. Approximately 20 cc of the fluid surrounding the fetus is aspirated and sent to the laboratory for analysis. It is important to note that this procedure is performed without anesthesia or even local anesthesia, is painless, and does not require hospitalization after the sample collection.

Necessary Preparations for Amniocentesis

Removing unwanted abdominal hair.
Carrying a laboratory referral letter.
The presence of one companion is required for administrative procedures.

Complications of Amniocentesis

One of the complications of amniocentesis is the puncturing of the gestational sac, which can result in fluid leakage. This condition can typically be resolved with rest, but in rare cases, it may lead to miscarriage.
